Emotional Labor and White Women

What is emotional labor? How can white women honor their own experiences and frustrations with sexism while also acknowledging and discussing the broader context of the emotional labor Black people expend when educating white people about racism? How does whiteness cause harm in movements such as feminism, which have historically excluded Black women?

In this series on healthcare and social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts and gives her own insights into multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism.

In this episode, Jill uses a recent social media post that she saw to highlight the dangers of white women using the term ‘emotional labor’ without acknowledging the broader context of the harm and danger that Black people face (historically and currently) as they undertake the emotional labor of educating white people about racism. She discusses how movements such as feminism have historically been racist, and how important it is for white women to recognize opportunities to amplify the work of Black women.
